ABOUT LARRY SASS

Larry Sass digitally fabricates homes and furniture from machines. As a professor in the Department of Architecture at MIT, his work is focused on the delivery of affordable housing. As a researcher, Larry works with students to develop computer-generated designs for fabrication, prototyping, and building systems. His methods of computation are similar to those used in 3D printing systems. The novelty of his work is in the many ways his algorithms decompose a 3D model into sets of non-uniform components. The system generates building parts ready for self-guided assembly. Success is measured by the efficiency of human interaction, material use, time in production, cost, and human cognition. He expects that his fabrication system, now called Plane Objectives, will impact production efficacy in new home construction worldwide.
