ABOUT LARA RIOS

Recent graduate of the New Jersey Institute of Technology with a B.S. in Civil Engineering and currently working for Gilsanz Murray Steficek (GMS) as a Structural Engineering Intern. Hoping to gain as much knowledge from this experience before heading off into a Ph.D. program in 2024. Following in my father\'s footsteps, I study at NJIT and decided on pursuing a BS in Civil Engineering because of my passions in math, physics, and art. Early success in my major offered me the chance to graduate a year sooner, but instead, I took this opportunity to do a Co-Op with Mott MacDonald, a chance at an industry-focused learning experience during the semester. Having spent time during the academic year gaining this experience, I used the summers to pursue my interests in research. I have a lot of experience working in professional environments from leading committees to coordinating with teams, but one of my goals is to gain wisdom from those in the field that I look up to. To achieve this I began by learning from the upperclassmen around me by joining clubs and building relationships. As a senior, I held leadership positions to impart the knowledge I’ve gained to the younger generations. I served as President of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) and Diversity and Inclusion Officer of the Student Senate. Outside of school, I interned for Move The Needle, an accelerator for underserved communities. Using these opportunities and all the information I gained from my coursework, I\'m happy to continue learning as an intern with GMS.
