WORK HISTORY
Instructor @Communication Leadership At The University Of Washington
Seattle, WA, US
I teach a graduate-level communications course on wellness narratives. The class explores the historical rise of self-help narratives during the turn of the 20th Century through advertising and therapy culture centered on the body and self-improvement. By mid-century, we explore how television became the ultimate consumer object and format to relay wellness to the masses. And by the end of the 20th century, we examine the rise of formats like Reality TV and Talk Show, social media platforms, mixed reality and the onslaught of generative AI to better understand the evolution of the wellness narrative into the 21st century. What does it really mean to be well? The goal of this course is for students to better understand the historical, cultural, economic and technological foundations of wellness as it relates to the media we each consume and view each day.
