About Lani Lee

Lani Lee is a photographer living and working in New York City. Born in 1983 in Seoul, South Korea, Lee has lived and traveled extensively throughout Asia and the Middle East during her childhood. In 2005, Lee graduated from the Art Institute of Seattle.Lee currently works as a bicoastal photographer, splitting her time on assignment between Los Angeles and New York. As a self-taught photographer, Lee booked her first shoot without having any formal training, but soon after, attended Art Institute to study commercial photography, graduating with a double portfolio in portraiture and photojournalism, expanding her knowledge for her newfound passion. Lee’s graduating project involved a compelling photo essay about a hospital in Honduras focusing on aids patients.Her most recent body of work titled Mug Shots consists of a collection of portraits of graffiti writers and gang members, subjects that normally would not consent to being photographed. Lee’s understanding of street culture along with her extraordinary life experiences have allowed her to gain the trust and respect of her subjects.Her commercial clients include Atlantic Records, Microsoft, Red Bull, Boost Mobile, Fresh Jive, Black Scale, The Seventh Letter, Agenda and Reaper Records. Her work has been published in Playboy, Rolling Stone, Frank 151, Inked, Antenna and Urb.
