I got my start in oil and gas because oil prices were flirting with $100 when I graduated from college, and at that time, if you had heard the term “landman,” you could probably find work as one. I made it through numerous downturns because, for one, I don’t mind spending unreasonably long hours away from home, buried in details and documents. But, perhaps even more than hard work, the oil and gas industry rewards resourceful, practical problem solvers — and I am exceptional at spotting opportunities and finding solutions when there’s no clear path forward.As a landman, that meant finding missing owners by tracking down old newspaper articles about their bluegrass band.At home, it means thoroughly understanding airline and credit card rewards systems so I can fly first class to Tokyo and Prague on points. Or pinpointing the nuanced differences between our custom fantasy football league’s scoring system and ESPN’s projections to help me win five consecutive championships. As an attorney, when our outside counsel insisted that the only way to value a lawsuit was to “feel it out,” I knew that couldn’t be the answer. I worked cross-functionally to develop a sophisticated system to evaluate cases and reach real, justifiable numbers, which a partner at one firm dubbed “Moneyballing” litigation. When asked to document the process as part of a company-wide initiative, I took it a step further. I worked with our IT group to design and build custom software that streamlined and automated most of the interactions.I’m driven to thoroughly understand systems and find ways to use them more effectively and efficiently. The law is just another system.
