This interactive course introduces students to the role of self and group in the leadership process. Through academic study, personal assessment, in-class activities, and assignments, students will gain an understanding of how personal development impacts leadership capabilities, theimportance of self-understanding to effective leadership, and the relationship between self-identity and group process. In addition to self-study, students will study group development, group think, and the effect of power and communication styles in group dynamics. LDSP 395, Leader Follower Relationships (3 credits)- upper level elective course which incorporates student participation in the Collegiate Leadership Competition. Students will explore perspectives on the roles of leaders and followers within the leadership process, with special attention to the practical aspect of honing leader-follower and teamwork skills through applied, team-based learning. As a foundation for practical application, students will consider scholarship on followership; the leader-follower role-relationship; power, authority and influence; and group dynamics and teamwork. This course extends core leadership courses via a deeper investigation of leadership, followership, group dynamics, and teamwork with critical emphasis on real-time role-play, giving and receiving of feedback, and skill development through application.
