In my current position I am responsible for testing of multiple layers of backup power for Mission Critical data centers including Barclays, Bloomberg and Equinix. I review one-line diagrams of backup power and testing and commissioning of that back up power sequence for major data centers that include generators and U.P.S. systems. I verify that the design drawings are all accurate during the design stage, while I perform project management tasks and design review. I verify the client’s functional testing and commissioning of data centers. We are responsible for testing automatic startup of backup power and testing of power quality. MY CHALLENGE: Data centers and other large commissioning centers need backup power as they cannot afford to lose power in the event of a black out. My challenge is to leverage my familiarity with building regulations and electrical installation, culled from both field and theoretical perspectives to ensure power backups are in place and in working order. MY ACTIONS: 1. Travels around the country to data commissioning centers to transfer power to backup generators. Achieves, evaluates, and documents the performance of buildings, systems, and assemblies, and that they meet defined objectives and criteria. Recalculates the original designer specifications to verify the accuracy of the load calculations. Designed electrical systems for projects which included various large stand-by generator for mission critical facilities MY RESULTS: 1. Data centers have backup power in the event of any power grid failure. Discovered miscalculations on the drawings submitted by the design engineer in the commissioning process that needed to be dealt with prior to the startup of the data center. Prevented and reduced errors in the design and construction processes. Helped deliver projects on time and on budget; saved money by identifying mistakes and submitting recommendations.
