DR is a tool used by the power grid operator that provides advanced notification of potential grid instability and pays businesses to be on standby and temporarily reduce some of their electric consumption or switch to back-up generation if emergency conditions arise on the power grid. The Program is free to join, carries no risk of penalties, allows facilities to protect sensitive equipment from sudden losses in power, and provides a significant financial incentive for a couple hours of annual participation.
