Kyla Hurns is a graduate of The Ohio State University, where she earned her degree in Public Management, Leadership, and Policy, with a minor in Education Policy, graduating Magna Cum Laude with Honors. Throughout her academic and professional journey, Kyla has been deeply committed to advancing equitable education policies and fostering environments where all students can thrive. She is a passionate advocate for dismantling systemic barriers in education and creating opportunities for underrepresented and marginalized communities.Driven by her belief in the power of education as a tool for transformation, Kyla has actively immersed herself in leadership roles and professional experiences that align with her mission. At Ohio State, she served as Chief of Staff for the Undergraduate Student Government, overseeing a team of over 200 individuals, and as Chair of the Black Caucus, where she built critical connections between students and alumni while managing budgets and programming aimed at uplifting Black students. She also worked as a Social Change Ambassador, designing and implementing impactful mentorship programs for middle school girls to foster leadership and self-confidence.Professionally, Kyla has honed her skills in policy development, research, and strategic analysis. As a Senate Page for the Ohio State Senate, she developed speeches, talking points, and legislation analysis for state policymakers, advocating for her constituents. During her time at Kearney as a Business Analyst Intern, she led market analysis and strategic supplier negotiations, showcasing her ability to balance analytical precision with innovative problem-solving. Her fellowship with JP Morgan Chase & Co.’s Advancing Black Pathways program and her policy internship at Impact Strategies further solidified her expertise in crafting actionable solutions to address pressing social and educational issues.Kyla’s dedication to research is equally notable. She has contributed to studies on racial disproportionality in school discipline and effective school boards, presenting data-driven insights to inform equitable policies. Her published research on culturally responsive early childhood programs reflects her commitment to creating inclusive education systems from the ground up.
