The CROWN project within Dr. Oluwabunmi Ogungbe’s lab is an innovative, salon-based intervention aimed at improving blood pressure management among Black and Hispanic women in the Baltimore-Washington Metro area. Grounded in cardiovascular epidemiology and health equity, the study trains hairstylists to deliver culturally relevant health education while integrating blood pressure screening, home monitoring, and follow-up support from community health workers and pharmacists. Using a hybrid effectiveness-implementation design, we’re assessing the impact of this trusted, community-based approach on systolic blood pressure in women with uncontrolled hypertension.
