About Jennifer Kurtz

After four years focused on helping manufacturers in the defense industrial navigate their route through conformance to NIST SP 800-171 and CMMC, I applied that experience and previous ISO/IEC 72001 experience to the K-12 educational sector. Within a few months of consulting for LinkIt-a data warehousing and analytics services provider for K-12 communities across the US and Australia (Department of Victoria)-I stepped into its newly created CISO position. Although the principles are the same (e.g, situational awareness, least privilege, least functionality, least persistence, least prevalence), the challenges are greater. Instead of balancing DFARS and ITAR requirements, we balance security and privacy requirements, which differ based on local, state, and national privacy laws. The shared responsibility model for cybersecurity in the education sector adds another dimension. Always learning! I was recently included among the Top 25 CISOs by Women We Admire.As an advocate for sustainable security solutions, I have written numerous articles, blogs, and presentations for delivery throughout the US, and was designated as the Rocky Mountain region\'s cyber \"go-to\" resource under a DoD grant awarded to the NIST Manufacturing Extension Partnership Program. I have assisted numerous organizations within critical infrastructure sectors on cybersecurity implementation projects, with a strong emphasis on NIST Cybersecurity and Risk Management Frameworks as well as others.
