I write speeches, op-eds, and other internal and external communications for David J. Skorton, MD, the president and CEO of the nonprofit association of America’s teaching hospitals, medical schools, and health systems. In my first year at the AAMC in 2020, I wrote a speech that earned the 2021 Cicero Speechwriting Award in the Healthcare category-a landmark leadership plenary speech delivered at the AAMC annual meeting to a virtual audience of more than 4,800: “Now is Our Time to Act.” Since then, my team and I earned a second Cicero Award in 2023 (in the “Controversial or Highly Politicized Topics” category) and a Cicero Honorable Mention, as well as both a Platinum and Gold Hermes Creative Award and an Honorable Mention — for speeches at Vanderbilt, Medical College of Wisconsin, and University of Kansas, plus the AAMC Annual Meeting.In my time at the AAMC, I have written multiple medical school commencement speeches, including for the University of Rochester, as well as the prestigious Cartwright Lecture that Dr. Skorton delivered at Columbia University and speeches delivered at medical schools at Duke, Morehouse, and University of Miami. During moments of stress in our nation, I\'ve written press conference remarks in which Dr. Skorton shared updates from the front lines of the pandemic, and drafted internal communications to inspire dialogue with AAMC staff about health justice issues. The AAMC is a nearly 150-year-old association dedicated to transforming health care through innovative medical education, cutting-edge patient care, groundbreaking medical research, and community collaborations.
