ABOUT KRISTEN CAIRNEY

I’m a reflective and impact-driven leader focused on transforming how systems respond to complex social challenges. With over 15 years of experience working alongside young people with intersecting needs, my work sits at the intersection of housing, health, and systems change—turning insight into action and research into results. As Executive Director of Wyndham House, I lead a team that delivers a full continuum of supports for youth—from basic needs to high-acuity, wraparound clinical care. Our work has contributed to sustained reductions in chronic youth homelessness in our community—not just because of what we do, but how we do it. One of our core values is creative persistence—and I’ve built a leadership practice around operationalizing best practices in ways that are grounded, responsive, and real. It\'s in the implementation—when the rubber hits the road—where real change happens.Through ongoing academic study and applied research, I bring a scientific and reflective lens to my leadership. I hold graduate degrees in both Social Work and Family Relations & Human Development, and have taught, published, and practiced clinically throughout my career. I continue to maintain a small private practice, specializing in DBT and trauma-focused CBT, which keeps me closely connected to the lived experience of the young people we serve.I care deeply about service design that works in practice—models that are trauma-informed, equity-centered, and responsive to the intersecting systems that often create and sustain marginalization. My work focuses on shifting not just outcomes, but the conditions that make inequity possible in the first place. Whether through health and housing integration, continuous quality improvement, or bold service redesign, I believe in pushing systems to work better for those who rely on them most.Let’s connect if you’re working toward evidence-informed innovation, youth well-being, and equity-driven system change.
