About Katherine Oreilly

As a Graduate Research Fellow at the University of Illinois, I work on MiaPURE, a project that aims to provide hands-free mobility for people with impairments. I apply my skills in user-centered design, CAD, and manufacturing to create modular, interactive, and adaptive devices that enhance the quality of life of the users. I graduated from Columbia University with a BS in Mechanical Engineering in May 2023, where I was involved in various academic and extracurricular activities that honed my engineering and leadership abilities. I was the Chief of Mechanical Engineering for the Formula SAE team, leading the efforts for Columbia\'s first-ever formula-style electric vehicle that competed successfully in events. I was also an undergraduate researcher in the Robotics Manipulation and Mobility Lab, co-authoring a paper on a compact novel quick release mechanism to aid in supination of hemisparetic stroke subjects for the MyHand Orthosis project. Additionally, I completed internships at General Dynamics, Markforged, and Apple, gaining valuable experience in systems, quality, and hardware testing engineering. I am passionate about STEM education and mentorship, and I have volunteered for various K-12 programs with MIT, robotics, and the college application process. I am also a low-income and first-generation student, and a recipient of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund and the GEM Fellowship. I strive to use my engineering skills and knowledge to make a positive impact on society and inspire the next generation of engineers.
