About Koen Malfait
Koen is a Belgian designer and hands-on creative director based in Brooklyn, New York. His two decades of experience have taught him that visual storytelling has the power to achieve any business objective Most recently, Koen led the global creative team across Google’s hardware (Pixel, Nest) and services (Google Fi, Google One) brands to deliver multiple award-winning ad campaigns, logos and brand identities, packaging, experiential installations, photography art direction and was also the creative director on multiple of the hardware brand launch events. Prior, Koen was a creative director at Google Creative Lab for over 2 years.As an eternal optimist, Koen loves to operate at the intersection of design, culture and technology and strongly believes creative excellence always starts with a high dose of empathy towards the end user. It explains his soft spot for democratic brands, which is reflected in his diverse roster of clients featuring Ikea, Nike, Google, Nest, Youtube, Android, Microsoft, Starwood Hotels, Netflix and RSC Anderlecht, the world’s best and most beautiful football club (according to Koen). It also explains Koen\'s empathic approach to leadership and team building, in general.Over the last two decades, Koen’s iconic work was recognized with numerous industry awards. Most recently, he was leading the team that won Brand Side Agency of the Year in both the One Show and Art Director’s Club award shows in 2022 with Google Devices and Services.You will usually see Koen sporting a black t-shirt with a statement with white type on it, which recently inspired him to start his own t-shirt label Shirts by Kong.
