The Expedition School (TES) is a top-ranked K-8 public charter school in Hillsborough, North Carolina. In 2024, TES was ranked #13 in North Carolina Middle Schools and #7 in North Carolina Charter Middle Schools by U.S. News and World Report with Middle School Mathematics proficiency ranked #14 in the state (85% proficient). Katherine teaches math to 2/3 of the students included in these rankings. She served on the school-wide Math Curriculum Adoption Committee and currently serves on the school-wide Math Leadership Team, including leading professional development for fellow teachers in the school.Katherine has developed cross-curricular project based learning units for students in line with state math standards and presented on project work at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Annual Meeting in Los Angeles, CA in 2022 (Session #89) and in Washington, DC in 2023 (Session #562).Katherine leads an enrichment group for students in grades 6-8, including preparing students for the American Mathematics Competition (AMC) 8 every year since 2019. In 2024, TES was named a School of Merit for Outstanding Performance on the AMC 8, and one student was named to the worldwide Honor Roll.Also during her time at TES, Katherine has developed and implemented standards-aligned and specially-designed mathematics instruction using math learning progressions compatible with students’ Individual Education Programs (IEP) with 7th and 8th grade students in a pull-out setting.
