About Kōan Jeff Baysa
Kōan Jeff Baysa is a medical doctor (Clinical Immunology, UCSF) who first engaged contemporary art as a collector, then curator (Whitney Museum ISP Fellowship, IKT), art writer and critic (AICA International, d\'Art International), and international museums committee member (CiMAM). •. His interests lie in the roles of artists and the arts in activism addressing social and environmental injustices, repatriation of cultural objects, in addition to the confluences of medical sciences and contemporary cultures. •. Founder of the Honolulu Biennial, he is the Co-founder of the Joshua Treenial, a site-responsive event in the California high desert, and Creative Director of iBiennaleX, a globally itinerant art summit. •. Commissioned to curate a traveling exhibition of works from the Philippines diaspora, he also received a Ford Foundation grant to survey contemporary art in Vietnam. Invited as curatorial advisor for Congo Biennale in Democratic Republic of the Congo, Icelandic Biennale in Iceland, and the Kigali Triennale in Rwanda, he coordinated special projects for the Great Green Wall of Africa Foundation. •. His global curatorial project locations have ranged from Croatia to China, Kowloon to Kinshasa, Hanoi to Havana, Marrakech to Manila, and from Alula to Austin, among others. In addition to being on the boards of the Vera List Center for Art and Politics in Manhattan, he served as Critic in Residence 2006 and Critic in Residence Emeritus (2011) at Art Omi in upstate NY, as well as the Great Meadows Foundation in Louisville, Kentucky. He assisted medical missions in conflict zones in Beirut and Bosnia. •. Dr. Baysa is based in Los Angeles with regular stays in Hawai’i and New York, and is currently developing projects in Hawai’i, New York, Los Angeles, Doha, and the Himalayas.
