About Kirsten Gard
I\'m Kirsten, a environmental professional hoping to make a difference I am currently working as a Staff Environmental Scientist at Burns & McDonnell Engineering, Inc. within our Environmental Studies team. Within this role, I work alongside ecologists, wetland scientists, land use specialists, and engineers to produce high-quality deliverables for our clients. I primarily work on projects involving siting and routing for large utility companies, utilizing ArcGIS and public databases to create detailed reports and figures, allowing clients to bring energy to communities while being mindful of the impact. This role offers me the opportunity to work with a variety of clients, ranging from large-scale energy to pharmaceuticals manufacturing. I obtained my M.S. in Climate Change & Society from North Carolina State University in December of 2024. I graduated with a 4.0 GPA and my capstone project was titled \"Inequitable Impacts of Extreme Urban Heat: Analyzing the Lasting Effects of Redlining on Urban Heat Islands and Environmental Justice in Durham, North Carolina.\" I am very passionate about climate change and sustainability, and hope to focus more on these subjects as my career progresses. Prior to my current position, I worked as an Associate Environmental Scientist at Parsons Corporation, where I assisted with a large-scale PFAS remediation project in the Cape Fear River watershed in North Carolina. I obtained my B.S. in Geography and Environmental Resources from Southern Illinois University in 2021, where I graduated with a 4.0 GPA. Within my major, I had two specializations: Climate and Water Resources, and Environmental Sustainability. I also obtained a minor in Environmental Studies and was employed as an Undergraduate Research Assistant.
