New York Director X Chief Human Resource Officer @Emma\'s Torch
Brooklyn, NY, US
Emma’s Torch is a non-profit social enterprise. Our mission is to train refugees, asylees, and survivors of human trafficking in the culinary arts and to empower them to build meaningful careers in the culinary industry. Our students participate in a full-time, paid, culinary training program in preparation for job placement. We celebrate what they have to offer, and we affirm their innate value and power. Emma’s Torch honors Emma Lazarus, a staunch advocate for refugee rights whose poem, “The New Colossus,” adorns the Statue of Liberty. As New York Director, I am responsible for managing both the operational and social missions of the organization within New York. My role is responsible for overseeing all New York-based operations and staffing. This includes the organization’s ability to achieve program outcomes, ensure financial stability and success, as well as drive the organization forward and towards new growth opportunities. The New York Director is responsible for maintaining and growing the organization’s presence in New York, working creatively to chart the next chapter of Emma’s Torch in New York.

ABOUT KIRA OBRIEN
As the New York Director of Emma\'s Torch, I am guided by a passion for community, empowerment and education. Before joining Emma\'s Torch, my career as a Social Worker spanned from welcoming newly arrived refugees at the International Rescue Committee to supporting undergraduates in social justice work at Princeton University. A recent graduate from the Rutgers School of Social Work, my doctoral research focused on the role of experiential education in empowerment: how learning through doing can shape who we are and how we see ourselves in the world. I can think of no better example for this than right in the kitchen at Emma\'s Torch.A Brooklyn native and Queens transplant, I spends most of my free time trying new foods, debating the characteristics of the perfect slice of pizza, reading science fiction and being bossed around by my cat, Yoda.Experience in:Program and organizational development Monitoring and evaluationChild welfareRefugee and asylee populationsNYC public school systemSpecial-needs early childhood educationManagement
