The Gates Millennium Scholarship is a product of a $1 billion grant donated in by Bill and Melinda Gates to alleviate the financial burdens of a postsecondary education for minorities. Through a holistic selective process, individuals out of applicants in 2016 were chosen nation wide to receive funding for up to five years undergraduate and up to a Ph.D. in selective graduate studies. In addition to funding, the scholarship provides a mentorship program for scholars as well as opportunities to attend national conferences that address social issues prevalent in today\'s society.
