ABOUT KINGA JANIK

Between and 2009, I worked as a legal advisor for the Government of Canada at the Department of Justice, advising policy makers on refugee and immigration issues. During this time I had several positions and had been involved in diverse projects related to Human Rights Law. I was assigned to work with the Refugee Section and the Corporate Division within the Department of Citizenship and Immigration. The implementation of the Canadian immigration act required intense training for new administrative decision-makers called Pre-Risk Removal Assessment Officers which I undertook. Working closely with the Assistant Deputy Attorney General was also a great opportunity to liaise with the Justice Deputy Minister\'s office as well as different departments and legal services involved in transnational criminality, national security and immigration matters. In 2009, I moved to Italy with my husband and returned full-time to the redaction of my thesis on the criminalization of refugee claimants, which I was able to conclude in 2014. The main topics of my thesis are terrorism, minority rights, self-determination rights (Tamil’s situation in India and Sri Lanka) and the absolute prohibition of torture, especially removal to torture. In 2012, my husband and I moved to his hometown in Altamura (Bari), where we opened a bookshop. Although starting up a bookshop in the South of Italy has little to do with my legal background, getting funds, managing the communications and adapting to another culture and language was a beautiful challenge on many levels. All things considered, I wish to pursue a career in which I can leverage my legal background.
