Sometimes the most inspirational ideas come from some of the most challenging circumstances. A number of years ago, I was a Program Dentist for a Head Start program in Montclair, NJ. I was called into the office one evening for an emergency patient. When I came to the office, there was a 5 year old little girl with a possibly life threatening dental abscess. Her grandaunt explained that they couldn’t find anyone to treat it because of the limits with their Medicaid insurance. This was a problem that is all too common in this field, lack of education and limits on health insurance cause dental issues and emergencies to go largely untreated for millions of low-income children in under served communities. That night, after pondering this circumstance, the idea for KinderSmile Foundation was born.We are advocates for children, providing dental treatment and education that is often out of reach for low-income children. Early Intervention and prevention for children is our focus. We are a non-profit organization and we are always looking to partner with other non-profits, as well as other dental health professionals and organizations with a passion for assisting underserved children. We provide care and treatment through a variety of avenues including mobile service. We partner with schools, shelters and other community organizations in order to be where our services are most needed. Our commitment to service landed us a nomination for the Russ Berrie Community Service Award and a number of other awards and recognition.I firmly believe that oral health is the gateway to total health.
