ABOUT KINAR DHAMELIYA
I first learned about disease at the bedside, listening to patients describe symptoms that textbooks couldn’t fully explain. But the more patients I saw during and after my MBBS, the clearer it became that illness doesn’t begin in hospitals. It begins in homes, neighborhoods, workplaces, and systems. The patterns were there. I just needed the tools to see them.Public health and epidemiology gave me those tools.At the University of Cincinnati, I learned how to step back from individual cases and ask bigger questions. What happens when thousands of lives are examined together? While working with the Fernald Community Cohort, I analyzed data from over participants to understand long-term environmental health impacts. At the City of Springdale Health Department, I examined cardiovascular mortality alongside BRFSS risk factors, translating numbers into insights that could guide prevention, not just describe outcomes.Data became my way of listening at scale.Whether learning to manage study data in REDCap, navigating IRB processes and protocol development, or cleaning messy datasets in SAS, R, SPSS, and Excel, I found satisfaction in turning complexity into clarity. Through community outreach with the Community Engagement Core (C4Health), that clarity came full circle, returning to people in the form of education, engagement, and informed decision-making.What drives me is simple. Data should do something. It should inform action, reduce disparities, and strengthen communities, not sit quietly in reports.Now, as an MPH Epidemiology graduate, I’m excited to bring together my clinical foundation, research experience, and public health analytics to work on projects where evidence leads to impact.
