ABOUT KIIRSTI OWEN

I’m a Wildlife Biologist with Keefer Ecological Services Ltd.(KES), where I analyze wildlife data, write technical reports, mentor junior staff, and support field programs across a range of taxa. While my expertise lies in avian ecology, my work now spans multiple species groups, and I’m particularly interested in expanding KES’s capacity for bird and species-at-risk research.I completed my PhD at the University of New Brunswick (2025), studying wetland bird use of human-made landscapes in collaboration with Ducks Unlimited Canada. I also hold an MSc from the University of Windsor and a BSc and Diploma in Ecological Restoration and Fish, Wildlife, and Recreation from BCIT. Since 2012, I’ve conducted ecological fieldwork across Canada and internationally, gaining extensive experience in wildlife and vegetation surveys, bird banding and handling, and field team leadership. I recently joined the board of the BC Chapter of The Wildlife Society and continue to volunteer as an eBird reviewer for New Brunswick. I’m passionate about teaching and mentorship, with experience as an Ornithology instructor at Dalhousie University and as a teaching assistant for courses in ecology, physiology, and communications. I’m passionate about connecting science, education, and applied conservation to create meaningful impact for both people and wildlife.
