Perform unilateral entorhinal lesion to compare the neuroplasticity of female Sprague-Dawley rats. Use electrophysical analysis and histology of the brain to study plasticity. ABOUT KIERRA MARSHALL
My name is Kierra Marshall and I am a first year PhD student at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). In May 2024 I graduated from Davidson College with a Bachelor of Science degree Cum Laude Honors in Neuroscience. My four years at Davidson cumulated in my senior thesis, regarding the lesion-induced synaptic plasticity using a pre-post-menopausal model of Alzheimer\'s disease, conducted under the guidance and mentorship of Dr. Julio Ramirez. This study focused on understanding sprouting effects in the crossed temporodentate pathway (CTD) post-unilateral entorhinal cortex lesion in female rats, as well as lesion-induced sprouting of acetylcholinesterase-containing septal input to the dentate gyrus using electrophysiological analysis to observe the amplitude of the CTD pathway, indicative of the CTD sprouting response after EC injury.During my four years at Davidson College, I was a scholar-athlete on the Division 1 Women\'s Track and Field team. At MUSC, I am currently taking classes and gaining experience with various lab techniques through my rotations, leading up to my lab selection in April 2025.
