ABOUT KHALEEL AL-OBAIDY

Dr. Al-Obaidy earned his medical degree from the University of Dammam, Saudi Arabia, in 2012 where he started an anatomic pathology residency soon after. In 2015, He moved to the US where he pursued pathology residency training, followed by a year of head and Neck focused surgical pathology fellowship and a year genitourinary pathology fellowship, at Indiana University. These were followed by a molecular genetics pathology fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic. His major interest is in genitourinary tumor diagnosis and research with special focus on renal neoplasms classification and emerging entities. During his residency training at Indiana University, he re-defined the characteristic histologic features and subsequently the molecular characteristics of the first renal tumor with recurrent KRAS mutations; referred to as “papillary renal neoplasm with reverse polarity”. His work has also established the presence of a novel recurrent molecular alteration in the thyroid-like follicular renal cell carcinoma “EWSR1-PATZ1 fusion”. Over the past 4 years, He participated in major pathology conferences with more than 40 abstracts; published more than 40 articles in high-impact peer-reviewed journals and participated in the writing of 3 book chapters. Currently, he is a senior staff genitourinary, head & neck and molecular pathologist at Henry Ford Health in Detroit, MI.
