ABOUT KEVIN SUNGA
I’m a proud first-generation Filipino American with deep roots in both Tagalog and Kapampangan heritage. As the first in my family to graduate from a four-year university, I carry with me a strong appreciation for education and its role in shaping my leadership, critical thinking, and communication skills.Though I was born in San Francisco, my identity has been shaped by the many regions of Northern California I’ve called home—including San Mateo, Napa, Solano, Marin, Sacramento, and now San Joaquin County. These diverse experiences ground my perspective and fuel my commitment to community-centered work.My professional journey bridges public service, healthcare, and community advocacy. I began my career at UCSF, where I spent six years in oncology, one of the most challenging areas in healthcare. There, I applied Six Sigma and LEAN principles to improve patient care and operations at the UCSF Precision Cancer Medical Building at Mission Bay. However, beyond system improvements, I became deeply engaged in patient advocacy—navigating insurance denials, coordinating care across regions, and ensuring patients had equitable access to care and information.In 2021, I shifted my focus fully to community health and nonprofit leadership. I now serve in South Stockton, where I co-developed the Equity in COVID and Health Outcomes (ECHO) Program at Little Manila Rising, advancing COVID-19 response, vaccine outreach, and health education for historically underserved populations.Today, I work at the intersection of community development, health equity, environmental justice, economic equity, and youth leadership. I am a passionate nonprofit leader, grant writer and manager, and program strategist—committed to empowering communities of color and addressing the long-term effects of disinvestment and systemic inequity.
