Montgomery County is the third largest county in the state of Pennsylvania (US) and is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan region (census 5.7 million). Created as a department of county government, the Montgomery County Planning Commission is responsible for formulating the transportation, environmental, open space and design policies that shape the County’s built environment.A design planner works within a division of the Planning Commission known as the Urban Design Section, which is charged with providing collaborative design assistance both internally- to staff and other County departments- and externally- to government officials, lawyers, community groups and citizens. Its functions include reviewing development proposals, as mandated by state law; supplying design guidance to local authorities to affect the appearance of developments, consistent with County objectives; envisioning conceptual design solutions; making recommendations to municipal bodies regarding revisions and amendments to zoning ordinances/design regulations; and promoting design innovation through research and the publication of guidebooks and reports. The position is interdisciplinary in nature, demanding knowledge in landscape architecture, urban design, environmental graphic design, city planning, LEED and sustainability, as well as the newly formed discipline of rural design. Additionally, skills in computer aided design, conceptual design communication, 3D visualization, graphic design, desktop publishing, typography and are also required.
