ABOUT KEVIN BRAINARD

I am an executive brand consultant, creative director, and educator.I have led branding initiatives for global brands, cultural institutions, and agencies including AT & T, BBDO, Bloomberg L.P, Chase, Clinique, COLLINS, Consumer Reports, Interbrand, JPMorgan, Martha Stewart Living, MetLife, PACNYC, Sagmeister & Walsh, TED, and The New York Times amongst others.I have served as the senior design director of the strategy and brand experience design company COLLINS, the design director of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia and More magazine, an art director at HarperCollins Publishers and Artisan Books, as well as the senior designer at SpotCo (Spot Design). As the senior design director at COLLINS, I was integral to the design, development, and launch of the Microsoft Store—a cross-platform interactive experience that achieved a retail first: one massive, high definition, LCD screen that wraps 270° of retail space. Microsoft expanded the model to over 117 locations across North America that reached more than 1.2 billion customers a month. The identity and design system developed for the store inspired the new mark for Microsoft and its sub brands, as well as a redesign of their UI frameworks. The store earned several awards including the Jay Chiat Award for Creative Use of Technology and Jay Chiat Award for New Media. I also designed identities, packaging, and experiences for CNN, EOS, NBC, the New York Knicks, Mott’s, Walmart, and the World Economic Forum.Prior to joining Collins, I was the deputy design director of Martha Stewart Living where I led a team of art directors and designers that oversaw the design and development of the monthly publication with a circulation of over 1.5M. As the liaison and partner to the magazine’s managing editor, together we managed, coordinated, and facilitated, the editorial process from concept development to publication. During my tenure, the team at MSL was honored with over twenty awards from the Society of Publication Designers (SPD) and the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME).I have also served as a brand and design advisor for Circle of Blue and Designing Water’s Future—a global initiative to change how the world will care for and manage its dwindling freshwater supplies.I teach undergraduate Typography and graduate Design and Branding at the School of Visual Arts as well as Advanced Typography and Experimental Typography at Parsons School of Design. My work has been recognized nationally and internationally by most major professional organizations and publications.
