ABOUT KEVIN SIMMONS
Dr. Kevin Simmons is a nationally and internationally recognized researcher in polymer materials science with over 30 years of experience. As a Chief Materials Scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), he has extensive experience in all facets of polymer and composites processing, the properties of polymeric materials, and the use of polymers in products and systems. He specializes in material properties and product development and synergistically brings the two together to identify energy- and time-efficient processes for part fabrication. He also has extensive experience in developing methodologies for material and part testing and analysis. Dr. Simmons has worked in lightweight materials for weight reductions in heavy and passenger vehicle applications. He has also worked extensively on the compatibility and performance of polymer materials in hydrogen infrastructure both for high-pressure systems and the natural gas distribution system for blending natural gas with hydrogen. Dr. Simmons has received two R&D 100 awards from R&D magazine, one Federal Laboratory Consortium Ward, and a 2013 TechConnect Award. He is a Distinguished Inventor of Battelle, holding 19 US patents, and he has 6 foreign patents with 5 international patents pending. He was recently recognized by the DOE Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology Office as a recipient of the 2019 Safety, Codes and Standards Award. Dr. Simmons has also been recognized for outstanding contributions to science and engineering education by receiving the Fitzner-Eberhart Award at PNNL in Currently, Dr. Simmons is the technical leader at PNNL for three significant projects of which two are in hydrogen compatibility of polymer materials (funded by DOE-FCTO) and an adhesive joining project (funded by DOE-VTO). New areas of increased research are in recycling of cured thermoset composites and multilayer packaging.
