About Kevin Dougherty

Kevin Dougherty has been principal of Elmont Memorial High School since July 2015. During his tenure, he maintained a graduation rate of 96% or higher, cut the suspension rate by more than half, and Elmont was recognized by the New York State Education Department as one of the ten most successful schools for graduating young men of color. Under Mr. Dougherty’s instructional leadership, Elmont Memorial High School was twice recognized as an Apple Distinguished School and featured in National Apple commercials and literature. Mr. Dougherty also started both the Men and Women of Elmont leadership groups, which help young men and women become empowered and work to develop them into leaders within the school and their community. Men of Elmont’s work has been highlighted on NBC 4 New York and News12 Long Island. Mr. Dougherty also created a staff book club committed to anti-racism and equity. In 2018, Mr. Dougherty was the Nassau County BOCES Education Partner recipient for his outstanding work. Prior to being appointed Principal of Elmont Memorial High School, Mr. Dougherty spent 6 years working at Harlem Children’s Zone’s Promise Academy. The Harlem Children’s Zone is a pioneering nonprofit organization committed to ending generational poverty in Central Harlem. Mr. Dougherty was the founding Principal of Promise Academy II Middle School and under his leadership, his scholars surpassed District 5, City, and State averages on both ELA and Math exams. Before HCZ, Mr. Dougherty spent 7 years as a Special Education Teacher, Mathematics Teacher, and Staff Developer in both the Philadelphia area and New York City Public Schools. Mr. Dougherty has built his career and reputation on advocating for students in need and empowering them to achieve so they can compete with students from around the globe. Throughout his professional career, he has fostered a culture of academic success, collaboration, creativity, community and empowerment.
