Lower costs, better service, and fewer surprises - there are always opportunities, and I help utilities identify them. I am an environmental engineer specializing in infrastructure asset management (AM) with an extensive background in utilities planning. I spent 7 years in public service as the AM Program Director for the Columbus Department of Public Utilities, covering water supply, treatment, and distribution; wastewater collection and treatment; stormwater collection; power distribution; and street lighting. I am the Asset Management, Utility Planning, and Emergency Preparedness Leader for Burgess & Niple, assisting clients with the challenges of managing their vast, aging infrastructure so they can meet their customers\' needs while minimizing costs and risks.I am the Immediate Past Chair of the national AWWA Asset Management Committee (AMC) and the AWWA-Ohio AMC. I also serve on the AM knowledge team assisting the APWA AMC. I\'ve volunteered countless hours to professional committees developing content to advance AM practices, document leading-edge practices, and research and share the broad variety of government AM policies throughout the world.Since living in Australia/New Zealand in 2002, the birthplace of AM, I\'ve dedicated my career to advancing and implementing data- and experience-driven decision making in the utility sector. My ambition is to help communities in meeting their goals at the lowest possible cost, providing the greatest value to their customers, allowing those communities to thrive. My experience working directly for a utility for 7 years helped me understand the challenges of changing processes in the public sector. I\'ve learned the ingredients for making data driven decisions include more than data: practicality; staff skills, knowledge, and experience; politics; and the risk of making changes are all in my recipe when recommending changes to improve infrastructure management success.My recent focus has been on leveraging technology (both simple and cutting edge) to support efficient, effective decisions. I\'m helping advance an AI-driven, optical recognition software to code and map sewer defects faster and better (historically a subjective and time-consuming process). On the water side, I\'m using the most advanced watermain break prediction and replacement planning software available (infraSOFT) to predict future performance and develop investment strategies to cost-effectively manager break rates.With new technologies, experience, and knowledge, we can build a better tomorrow.
