ABOUT KENNETH NEWALU

My father, grandfather, and great-grandfather all have an aviation background so it is only fitting I chose to be a pilot. I am named after my great-grandfather Kenneth G. Ames who was a McDonald-Douglas Test Pilot and a Pan-Am Captain before retiring at Aloha Airlines back in 1966. He assisted in evacuating Americans from all over the South Pacific during WWII using his aviation skills for the betterment of humanity. My grandfather worked for Trans World Airlines and American Airlines before retiring in 2001 and returning home to Kaneohe, HI. Finally, yet importantly, my father, Earl Pilialoha Newalu Jr, has been an FAA Air Traffic Control Specialist for 35 years. He has held many positions during his career including serving as the Supervisor Traffic Management Coordinator at the Honolulu Control Facility. So following the in the footsteps of these great role models; I chose Aviation as a career. After graduating High School summa cum laude, I received a baseball scholarship to play shortstop at University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) where I also received my Bachelor’s Degree. Ole Miss did not offer an aviation program; so after graduating I enrolled in ATP flight school where I received all my ratings without any check failures. I had the pleasure of instructing other young pilots chasing their passion as well. After completing the 1500-hour requirement, I received an offer to fly for Republic Airlines. They fly the largest regional jet (EMB 175) in very complex environments such as New York, DC, and Atlanta for United, Delta, and American. Flying commercial is everything I dreamed it would be. The pride I feel connecting people safely to loved ones is worth all the hard work.
