ABOUT KEN O LUM
I am an Associate Principal at Adamson Associates and a licensed architect in both Canada and the United States. I lead the firm’s Design Department in Canada, overseeing complex buildings and major urban developments across commercial, residential, mixed-use, adaptive reuse, institutional, transit, and tall building typologies.Over nearly two decades, I have operated within demanding design environments across North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. My work includes supertall residential towers in New York, large-scale commercial office developments, transit-integrated master plans, and adaptive reuse projects involving heritage and civic infrastructure. I played a central role in shaping the architectural and performance framework for 50 Hudson Yards, contributing to its recognition as one of the most efficient office towers in North America. I authored the 12-million-square-foot East Harbour master plan, shaping Toronto’s emerging second downtown core through a transit-oriented, adaptable urban framework. I am currently leading the transformation of a confidential downtown city block — reimagining a historic precinct into a landmark mixed-use landscraper integrated with elevated park space and civic public realm. My contribution extends beyond design authorship to work-winning and business development. I lead RFPs, RFQs, EOIs, direct appointments, and competitive pursuits, aligning architectural vision with team formation, scope, fee strategy, risk calibration, and delivery planning alongside firm leadership and legal counsel. Central to this role is building long-term client relationships — establishing trust, communicating with clarity, and aligning ambition with commercial reality.I am routinely engaged on high-consequence projects where clarity, alignment, and stakeholder confidence are critical. Clients rely on my architectural judgment and systems-level understanding to balance ambition, cost, schedule, and public scrutiny. I have worked directly with developers and institutions including Google, Brookfield, Cadillac Fairview, Related, Choice Properties, Northcrest, and Ivanhoé Cambridge, and am regarded as a trusted voice in environments where performance and reputation matter. My work has been recognized nationally, including multiple Awards of Excellence and the RAIC Young Architect Award – Special Mention. I operate most effectively where design excellence, commercial performance, and institutional trust function as one integrated system.
