Teaching is the foundation of every operation. If the leaders of the operation fail to teach then those who report to them are destined to fail because they are not continually learning. Over my management career I have implemented the teaching style of Student, Teacher, Coach, and Mentor.Student:To be the student of one’s environment and of those who report to you so as to understand the technical aspects of the company and the understanding of how those who report to you best learn. Teacher:Being able to identify the learning gaps of one’s own team and developing a strategic training plan for each individual. Becoming the student of each team member then paves the way to a better teacher. Coach:Once teaching has occurred coaching then is at the forefront. Coaching applauds the team members when they successfully apply what they have learned. Coaching can also be used to hold the team members accountable for the teaching they received. Mentor:Once you have successfully become the student of your team, have effectively taught them, and have held them accountable to that teaching, a mentor is born as you have built and earned the trust of your team. Utilizing a teaching methodology incorporating Student, Teacher, Coach, and Mentor has proven extremely successful in the development of my teams.
