ABOUT KEN CAIRD

As an independent consultant to the electric power industry, I provide deep and widely recognized expertise in a wide range of utility Smart Grid automation fields spanning transmission, distribution, and microgrids. I provide the benefits of broad experience combined with unique capabilities to identify and clarify the interactions between technologies, economic and business considerations, and the role of standards and regulations. My technical depth lies in a number of diverse technical areas and disciplines, including Smart Grid technologies, substation automation, distribution and feeder automation, communication systems, primary equipment asset monitoring and diagnostics, as well as renewable energy and microgrid integration and automation.I have over 40 years’ experience in the Electric Utility automation field. I started my career as a Protection & Control engineer at a major Canadian Utility, where I was responsible for the design and installation of EMS and SCADA Systems, and communication networks as well as protection automation. After 15 years at the utility I became Director of R&D at a substation automation start up that became the #1 supplier of substation automation products in North America. After the company grew to $80 million dollars it was acquired by General Electric. After the GE acquisition I became Chief Engineer for the Substation Automation division. With the advent of the Smart Grid and the transition to a more systems oriented approach to the market, I was assigned the position of Smart Grid Systems Engineer within the newly formed Systems Engineering Group.
