Experience
Refugee Navigator
Oct 2024 — Present · Omaha, NE, US
As a refugee navigator, I work with families and individuals from around the world who have been resettled in the Omaha area. During their first five years, I\'m responsible to connect them with the resources they need to become independent, active, and healthy members of our community. I serve as an advisor, mentor, advocate, and source of assistance and encouragement. As part of an interdisciplinary team with physicians, therapists, nurses, social workers, and health educators, I assess needs in areas like adequate housing, food security, access to healthcare, and obtaining appropriate education. In addition to working directly with refugees to assess their needs and provide guidance, I work on behalf of refugees in a variety of ways, including- Building relationships with community organizations such as Omaha Refugee Task Force and the Nebraska DHHS Office of Refugee Resettlement to identify challenges and create strategies and programs to meet those challenges- Collaborating with community partners to develop and deliver needed services to refugee families and individuals, and to better integrate refugees into existing services- Recruiting sponsors, volunteers, and donors to provide resources unavailable through federal, state, or local government programs or non-profit sources- Regularly plan, launch and promote in-kind donation events through local places of worship, community organizations, and individual donors- Partnering with medical professionals, public health officials, language interpreters, and various community organizations to coordinate care and manage SDoH for medically fragile refugees- Completing federal and state applications in conjunction with refugees to obtain support such as Social Security disability, USCIS permanent residency, healthcare coverage such as Medicaid or employer-subsidized health insurance- Monitoring/evaluating program effectiveness; documenting results and reporting to meet federal grant requirements.
