I am the UFO Software Lead Technical Program Manager for Physical Infrastructure New Product Introduction at Google. That\'s a mouthful; what it means is this: UFO (Unified Fulfillment Optimization) Software provides all the systems solutions for the forecasting, planning, ordering, logistics, deployment, modelling, auditing, and operations automation for Google\'s worldwide fleet of data centers. Google also has a stellar team of hardware engineers, who constantly invent and refine technologies to make our data centers less expensive, more efficient, and more ecologically friendly. My job, roughly, is to ensure that our software supports new data center technologies and new data center designs as efficiently, scalably, and maintainably as possible. I help define the scope of the program, identify resources and schedules, gather and document requirements, and drive execution of the projects from inception to completion. My specific areas of focus are new rack technologies, new power technologies, new cooling technologies, physical automation technologies (ROBOTS!), and new data center designs. We build the newest, shiniest, most efficient data centers on the planet, and I am thrilled to be working on the leading edge of that. I also spend a significant portion of my time improving the data environment for my team, building highly instrumented reporting schemas for development tasks and work items that drive team KPI reporting and executive dashboards. I aim to improve our understanding of our job and drive performance improvements through reliable, flexible reporting that turns operations data into actionable intelligence.
