About Kevin Dirksen
Kevin is Senior Director, Providence Center for Health Care Ethics and the Andy & Bev Honzel Endowed Chair in Applied Health Care Ethics in Portland, OR. In this role, Kevin and the Center team engage in providing patients, families, and healthcare professionals with ethics support and resources in the clinical setting.Kevin completed the Arny & Anne Porath clinical fellowship in healthcare ethics at UCLA Health followed by a one-year, senior fellowship also at UCLA. Kevin then became Clinical Ethicist at UCLA Health for one year prior to joining Providence where he has served as Clinical Ethicist and Senior Ethicist; Director of Ethics Education. Before returning home to the U.S. to begin a career in clinical ethics, Kevin studied in Europe (Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy) where he completed an advanced masters degree (M.Sc.) in biomedical ethics at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen and Università degli Studi di Padova. His thesis for this program, with promoter Paul Schotsmans, was published in an international journal on philosophy and theology and is titled \"The Historical Roots of Personalism: Borden Parker Bowne and the Boston Tradition on Personal Identity and the Moral Life.\" In addition, Kevin has published in the American Journal of Bioethics, the Journal of General Internal Medicine, the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, Ethics, Medicine and Public Health, Acta Paediatrica, and Neuroscience & Empirical Bioethics specialty journals of the American Journal of Bioethics. Kevin studied at Boston University School of Theology where he obtained the Master of Divinity degree (M.Div.) specializing in Ethics & Health as well as completed undergraduate coursework at the University of Portland (B.A. in Philosophy & History and Political Science).
