The Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) is CDC’s two-year applied epidemiology fellowship that prepares public health professionals to investigate outbreaks, evaluate surveillance systems, and respond to urgent health threats. As an EIS Officer in the Division of HIV Prevention, my work includes analyzing national surveillance data to detect drug-resistant HIV and investigating molecular clusters of rapid HIV transmission. I evaluated the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance System to identify gaps in prevention data and strengthen program impact. During the 2025 measles outbreak in Texas, I deployed to develop clinical tools and dashboards that supported local decision-making. I also investigated opioid overdoses involving medetomidine, using chart abstractions and qualitative assessments to examine both acute use and withdrawal syndrome and guide public health response.
