ABOUT KAYE SAVAGE
My current research and practice is related to the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) movement, in which the arts and sciences are integrated for the purpose of sharing creative strategies across disciplines, providing deeper education, and valuing different ways of knowing and expression. My own work is focused on developing artworks that incorporate place-based scientific data, with the aim to intrigue the public and thereby to provide new information and knowledge to an audience that might otherwise not engage with the scientific enterprise. My research from 19••••12 addressed the mobility of potentially toxic elements, such as arsenic, lead, and mercury, considering chemical, physical, and biological interactions across different scales of time and space in environments at and near Earth’s surface. My research contributed to understanding trace element pathways by describing how their form at the molecular scale influences their mobility at the larger scales of soils and rivers. This is critical for assessing their ecological consequences.
