ABOUT RICHARD KAUFMAN

Over a 30-year career, I‘ve successfully managed clients’ government, legal and political affairs. What I bring to the table is a detailed factual analysis of each problem and the ability to sculpt those details into a compelling presentation before the courts, administrative bodies and legislative committees. My practice focuses on heavy equipment law for manufacturers and dealers, employment, environmental, administrative, political, and election law. My experience has been gained at the intersection of government and private business. That includes interfacing with elected and appointed government officials in the executive and legislative branches involving rule making, contracting, permitting, licensing, administrative hearings, sensitive political issues, ethical issues and, when the need arises, litigation in federal and state courts. My legislative and regulatory affairs experience includes three years overseeing Texaco, U.S.A. agenda in eight states. In addition I oversaw government affairs for the Colorado Attorney General’s office for seven years and acted as liaison to the Colorado Governor’s office at the same time. Recently I led efforts before the Colorado legislature to oppose the imposition of the Internet sales tax through affiliated companies. I spent nine years as an Assistant U.S. Attorney where I litigated over 500 cases in U.S. District Courts, including over 100 employment discrimination cases, federal tort claims involving catastrophic injuries and medical malpractice. I served as Colorado Deputy Attorney General where I was chief of the Criminal Enforcement Division. I served as a legislative assistant to U.S. Representative Hank Brown (R 4th CD – Colo.) after successfully managing his first campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives. My responsibilities included tax, budget, transportation and social security issues for Rep. Brown. In 2010, Gov. Ritter, appointed me to the Colorado Commission on Higher Education and Gov. Hickenlooper appointed me to another four year term in 2012. In 2016, the Governor appointed me to serve on the Fort Lewis College Board of Trustees and Gov. Polis appointed me to serve a second four year term in 2021. Presently, I serve on the FLC Foundation Board of Directors.
