About Katrina Kelly-Pitou
As Director of Climate Adaptation and Economics at SmithGroup\'s IMPACT (Integrated Multidisciplinary Performance Analytics and Climate Team), Dr. Katrina Kelly-Pitou bridges critical economic analysis with climate adaptation strategies. Her work centers on developing sophisticated forecasting models, quantifying climate risks, and applying advanced climatological insights to create practical adaptation solutions. At IMPACT, Katrina leads the social science research thrust of the team, integrating ecological, economic, and policy perspectives with technical climate solutions. This interdisciplinary approach ensures that engineering and scientific interventions account for socioeconomic factors, institutional constraints, and behavioral dynamics that influence implementation efficacy and outcomes. As an expert herself, Katrina integrates climate data into economic frameworks through statistical analysis and econometric modeling. This data transformation facilitates the development of financial mechanisms including: public-private partnerships for district energy infrastructure, university-based energy investment funds, internal carbon pricing systems for academic emissions trading, and climate bond structures designed to address funding gaps in adaptation projects. These instruments represent applied climate economics at the intersection of environmental policy and financial markets. Dr. Kelly-Pitou holds a PhD from the University of Nottingham in Climate Economics and Politics, completed postdoctoral research in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh, earned a Masters in International Relations and Environmental Studies from Hult International Business School, and received a BA/BSc in Economics and Political Philosophy from Duquesne University. In addition to her work at SmithGroup, Katrina is passionate about STEM education. She holds academic appointments as an affiliate scholar (University of Nottingham Center for Interdisciplinary Studies) and as an adjunct professor at Carnegie Mellon University (Engineering Science, Technology, and Policy). She has published extensively in Resilience and Smart Cities, PES, Energy Policy, and the European Economic Review. As such, Katrina has been appointed as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, as well as a committee steering member of the Commonwealth’s Council for Environmental Quality.
