About Katie King

If you look at my resume, it might seem like it’s going in a lot of different directions: a journalism major with a concentration in both editing and graphic design, and a second major in global studies focusing on Latin America and politics and social movements. Layouts for a global nonprofit’s annual report and feature stories for a North Carolina magazine. What do they all have in common (other than the fact that I find them fascinating)? Storytelling. I\'ve always loved a good story. As a kid, I read almost constantly. I wrote plays for fun. In high school, I joined the student newspaper staff, and from that point on, I knew I wanted to be a journalist. I learned the power of words and became eager to share stories that would change the world. My dream job was to write for National Geographic.I chose my college, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, based almost solely on its top-ranked journalism school. I had been editor of my high school newspaper, so I chose editing and graphic design as my concentration, and I fulfilled my curiosity about cultures around the world by double-majoring in global studies. Tempted by the visual storytelling of art, I strayed into the world of graphic design and landed my first job out of college creating print-on-demand products for a content marketing agency in Greensboro. But my first love was never far from my mind, and when the opportunity to join the editorial department at one of the largest regional magazines in the country – which also happened to be in Greensboro – came along, I took it.Now, as managing editor at Our State, storytelling is at the heart of everything I do. Every month, I work closely with our staff writer and freelancers to produce pieces on a range of topics, people, and places that together tell a story about North Carolina. I write heds, deks, and captions that extend the narrative beyond the body copy. I work with writers to improve their own storytelling. And sometimes, I write my own stories, ones that excite me and speak to my broader interests. When North Carolina starts to feel a little small, I write freelance stories for UNC Global or write and design content for Curamericas Global, where I’m on the board of advisors and the communications team. My study abroad experience in Peru, a summer internship in Costa Rica, and a journalism school trip to Mexico – as well as my own personal travels – have given me an appreciation for the world and its diverse people and cultures, and I love being able to share those stories, too.
