ABOUT KATIE WALDVOGEL

Hi! My name is Katie Waldvogel, and I’m a Master’s student in Biology at the University of California, Irvine. I recently graduated from UCI with a B.S. in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and a B.F.A. in Dance-Performance. I currently work as a Graduate Researcher under Dr. Mei Kong through UCI’s Department of Molecular Biology & Biochemistry. Our research aims to understand the role that pyruvate plays in tumor metastasis of colorectal cancer and to identify changes in the tumor microenvironment when mechanisms to transport pyruvate are disrupted. I’m experienced in maintaining cell culture, performing various biochemical and molecular techniques, and analyzing data. Along with my research experience in a laboratory setting, I’ve also gained professional experience through my internships at Sage Therapeutics and Batory Foods. While at Sage Therapeutics, my responsibilities were to analyze and restructure the Quality Systems Sharepoint site in a pattern that complimented the organization of the Veeva electronic Quality Management System (eQMS). This strategy was useful towards the long-term goal of assisting the Quality Systems team with document migration from Sharepoint to Veeva eQMS. My role at Batory Foods was similar, in that I interfaced directly with vendors and suppliers to obtain and transfer documentation to a database that our customers could easily access. In addition to my interest in science, I have a passion for dance. I began dancing at 3 years old, and have focused on ballet, jazz, tap, and hip hop techniques throughout my life. I have attended summer intensives at Boston Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, and American Ballet Theatre to expand my artistic boundaries and study under professional dancers, choreographers, and directors. My passion for dance has been an integral part of my life, and I feel that my artistic avenues have helped me become more of a meticulous, dedicated, and personable scientist.
