WORK HISTORY
Sovereign Cloud - Senior Technical Business Development Manager @Amazon Web Services (AWS)
London, GB
I was the first hire at AWS in 2021 in digital sovereignty, intersecting my cybersecurity, public policy and business expertise. I built out the practice at a time when ‘digital sovereignty’ and ‘sovereign cloud’ were niche fields, not yet in mainstream tech vocabulary. Since 2021, I launched our inaugural public sovereign cloud engineering roadmaps (Sovereign-by-Design), founded the AWS Digital Sovereignty Partner Competency, and published of our first thought piece on Sovereign AI. For the past two years, my focus has been on building the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, a new, 7.8B euro independent cloud for Europe, and the business cases for its footprint expansion across Europe. The AWS European Sovereign Cloud is now Generally Available as of Jan 2026, and we also announced Local Zone expansions in Belgium, Portugal and the Netherlands. I have represented AWS as a speaker at our highest level events of AWS re:Invent and re:Inforce.

ABOUT KATHY LIU
I am not on LinkedIn often these days so I will be delayed in responding to your my theatre roots, I love storytelling. I speak about why we must build emerging technologies with cybersecurity baked in. I write about sports, tech and society. I was the first hire at AWS in 2021 to build our global strategy on Digital Sovereignty, bringing my cybersecurity, public policy and business expertise altogether. My work over the years has come to a pivotal moment this Jan: the GA of the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, backed by a 7.8B Euro investment. I previously built out AWS’s Sovereign-by-Design approach and our digital sovereignty partner competency.I am a powerhouse public speaker. I have spoken at local platforms, such as in front of my mirror, but also at global platforms such as Davos 2024, the United Nations, the UK Cybersecurity Council, IAPP and AWS re:Invent.I’d like to write more opinion pieces (and less cringe LinkedIn posts). I revel in the productive agony of staring at a blank page. I’ve written about skateboarding and hybrid sports for the Los Angeles Times out of a cold-pitch. I’ve also written more regularly on cyber capacity-building and how to ignite youth mobilisation around cyber for the World Economic Forum Agenda. Other bits and pieces have appeared in the Chatham House Journal for Cybersecurity, the Canadian Security Magazine and TechUK blog.
