I used to get paid for crying. No, really. When I was in pre-school in China, I got scouted to become a child actress. That was when the world discovered my inclination toward tears. I soon became infamous in the Nanjing director circle as that child who could cry on the spot. I booked many roles as the crying child, making a minimal name for myself. This all came to an abrupt stop when I immigrated to the United States in 2009. I no longer had that creative output to express myself but continued on my journey to adapt to my new foreign environment.When I came to America, I barely knew any English at all. The most I could say in English were “Hi, how are you?” and “banana.” My language barrier was then exacerbated by the discrimination that I had faced. Kids would pull their eyes back to mock me and shove their pinky finger in my face asking if it was the “Chinese middle finger,” which obviously, it was not. Eventually, I hit a breaking point, I lost value in the emotions that I held so dear to me. It took me years to recover and realize the value of my cultural background and the value in those tears as more than a director’s cut or something to suppress. My emotions were what made me, me.In an increasingly efficiency-based society, many people seemed to have also neglected the values of emotions. That’s why I love the marketing industry and how it’s such a creative field that not only allows for emotional elements but almost requires it to connect with your clients. Whether it’s digital advertising, a company’s social media presence, or even a simple email campaign, I hope to work on building and bringing life into all the facets of a brand. After all, the last thing that we need is another boring sales pitch that speaks to no one.I am currently working as a Demand Marketing Manager at Resilio, a leading provider of fast, reliable file synchronization and data transfer solutions for global enterprises.Before I go, I want you to think to yourself, when was the last time that you cried? Maybe you should give it a go. Put on a sad movie, any Pixar movie will do, and let the waterworks speak for themselves.
