ABOUT KATHY MERRITT

I\'ve spent my entire career in public broadcasting, starting as a production assistant at WFAE in Charlotte, NC, just as the new public radio station was coming on the air. After serving as the station’s news director for 13 years, I became head of news at WAMU in Washington DC, where I hosted a local news magazine program and sometimes filled in as host for the station’s national talk shows. In 2005, I came to CPB where I helped create the first CPB-funded local journalism collaborations that brought small groups of stations together to cover specific issues and led the Public Radio Talent Quest, which launched the public radio careers of “Snap Judgment” host Glynn Washington and “Reveal” host Al Letson. I left CPB in 2013 to become Vice President of Content Strategy and Development at Public Radio International, then returned to CPB in 2017 to become SVP of Radio and Journalism. In October 2020, I added management of the radio and television Community Service Grant programs to my responsibilities, overseeing the distribution of more than $300 million annually to more than 500 public media stations. Specialties: Master of moving from concept to implementation; effective writer, editor and communicator; plays well with others.
