About Kathryn White
I worked in the nonprofit sector—nationally and locally—for 22 years, starting in graphic design at a national nursing association and ending as a U.S. executive director supporting indigenous women in the Lake Atitlán region of rural Guatemala. In the sector, I held roles in advocacy, communications, marketing, fundraising and consulting. In March 2018, I left Denver for southern California to spend time with my brother who had been suddenly hospitalized and our mom who was in advanced stage Alzheimer’s. The two died in April. From 2019 to 2024, I worked as a columnist, features reporter and editor for a handful of neighborhood newspapers in Denver, including one covering the neighborhood I’ve lived in since 1995. My column “The Gray Zone” focused on older adults and ran in The Denver North Star from January 2020 through August 2024.It took me a while to call myself a writer.During COVID-19, I pitched in at the COVID-19 screening table at the assisted living community down the street from my home. I fell in love with the setting and people. I helped out in the activities department after COVID restrictions eased, then worked with the head of Dining to re-open the community’s in-house coffeeshop. I left that gig when The Denver North Star needed a new editor, and I returned to it when I realized being an editor had taken me too far from the writing I’d grown to love. The in-house coffeeshop job was a fun gig, despite the low pay and long hours on my feet. Thanks to Denver City Council, the minimum wage in Denver isn\'t nearly as low as the current Federal minimum wage of $7.25/hour. I now work in the community\'s Memory Care program, spending five days/week supporting folks living with dementia. They are beautiful humans. And so are the colleagues I provide this care alongside. One day a week you can find me at Convivio Cafe or at Lighthouse Writers Workshop, steadily working to complete the book-length project I started in 2019, Dead People’s Things.
