About Kathryn Katie S.
My name is Katie Simmons, and I am a Senior at the University of Colorado Boulder pursuing a triple major in Psychology (BA), Sociology (BA), and Pre-Medical Studies, along with a Certificate in Sociology for Health, Care, and Resilience and a minor in Leadership Studies.As a McNair Scholar, I am committed to advancing research at the intersection of psychology, neuroscience, and child welfare. My current work focuses on placement instability, stigma, and mental health in U.S. child welfare systems. I am completing my Senior Honors Thesis under the mentorship of Dr. Ryan Curtis in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience, titled “Stigma and Placement Instability in U.S. Child Welfare Systems.”My long-term goal is to investigate intergenerational trauma and various systematic contributors to adversity in child welfare systems. I will use this research to inform policy, shape trauma-informed practices, raise awareness about the needs of historically marginalized and child welfare–involved populations, and implement comprehensive system reform.Ultimately, I will teach at the university level while conducting research that bridges science, policy, and lived experience through creating lasting change for foster youth and future generations.
